For those of you making the trip to Witton on Saturday, the ground (Wincham Park) is situated on an Industrial Estate and not near to anywhere apart from Northwich Victoria's ground.
So your pre-match pint may well be in the Witton Social Club unless you fancy a little stroll to the near-by village of Marston, about 20 minutes away. Here, in Ollershaw Lane, you will find the Salt Barge, a nice pub with a very good pint of Adnams, well worth the walk!

Access to Wittons Social Club is now only possible after gaining entry into the ground and it does not open until 1.30pm so a trip to the town centre/village may be the better option. Is there not a pub on the industrial estate at the end of the road in which the ground is in?

For those supporters arriving early at Witton they have a Witton FC museum inside the ground which supporters can visit. Not sure if there is an entrance fee.

You do turn opposite the "Black Greyhound" to get to the ground, haven't been in but I'd be surprised if it doesn't sell some real ale, fortunately most pubs seem to now...

There's allegedly a "Local Pub Guide" on the WA website (link via our fixtures list) but it looks like you have to be registered to access that and I can't be ar$ed....

Thanks for the links.
No mention of The Black Greyhound on any of them but the Salt Barge is listed. Also noticed The Antrobus Arms !
Glyn, you may be right, The Black Greyhound may serve real ale but not having been in, I don't know and even if it does I couldn't comment on the quality.
Having been in the Salt Barge, I can say the Adnams then was very good!

:rolleyes::doh::D

If in doubt phone them up?

It probably is the most conveniently situated for the ground...?

Cheers Mick.
The Broadside is a good drink although I prefer Discovery myself.
Can't recommend anywhere at Kendall as I've never been but I'm sure you'll know somewhere with a decent pint.

Your very welcome Beer Hunter. There are a few pubs in Kendal town centrethat sell real ale . The Wetherspoons is there and at the moment it has its real ale festival . When we went last year they had the summer real ale festival on and Ithink the beer was only £1.29p a pint with good selection of local brews. I hope to get in on Saturday so maysee you there .:clap2:

Anyone know why Wetherspoons is called Wetherspoons?

I learned yesterday, it's wonderful - I'll spill the beans later if you wish....

Apparently JD Wetherspoon was a teacher in NZ who told Tim Martin he would never amount to much....

In the great scheme of things the teacher was right of course. He may have made a bit of money but he hasn't even changed the nature of 'the pub' in a significant way. Contrast Messrs Churchill, Einstein and Shakespeare who by all accounts were not great successes at school but may wellbe remembered longer than the man who owns the pubs, whose name I've already forgotten.

I have met and chatted with Tim Martin a few times (He has a house on my local golf course in Cornwall) and I can tell you he is a decent chap and you would never guess who he was by his demeanour. He sold Wetherspoons for a a fair pile of money then got the job!!!

A similar story to how the old American Rock Band 'Lynyrd Skynyrd' got their name then.

I don't think I agree Mike.
IMO Wetherspoons have changed Pub culture.
Pre-Wetherspoons, there were very few Pubs in town centres who sold real ale and even fewer who sold it at a reasonable price. Also, 'spoons works on two levels- they have a daytime clientele, shoppers who will go there for lunch and the more mature drinker who enjoy a dinnertime pint while at night they tend to attract the younger market who drink there because it's cheap before moving on to the Night Clubs.
Since the conception of the Wetherspoon chain other Pubs and Pubcos have had to change their marketing strategy to become more competitive which has to be good for the consumer.
(Sorry, no mention of football, so I'll just add that I think we can get 3 points tomorrow :) )

Thanks for the offer, Mr Hunter - you can certainly get me three pints tomorrow - or perhaps I've already had enough.
Mr Winker on the other hand, encourages me to take it all back - is this Tim Wotsit interested in football at all? Does he want to sink some money in a club???

Went to a 'do' at the Kidderminster Harriers Social Club on Saturday night (it's OK, I watched our game first) and I'm happy to report that they had 3 Real Ales on offer- Deucheurs IPA, Hereford IPA and Sadlers Green Man which was excellent.
I was also well impressed by the memorabillia on display throughout the Aggborough Suite. Last season's FA Trophy Final was featured heavily but the Clubs past was also remembered with Cups, trophies and photos from as far back as 1934 adorning the walls.
Good to see them remembering the old days as well as the new.

I hope you mentioned the goal that was given to Kiddy at their place in the 1962-3 season, I think it was, that was never over the line and effectively cost us the West Midlands league in a 3-way contest with them and Tamworth. Though come to think of it my favourite moment at Aggborough was the not entirely politically correct chants coming from our younger supporters about their manager in our first season in the Conference concerning his size and orientation.

I don't remember the 1962 season as I'm too young (I don't get chance to say that very often) :).

Two recommendations for Ilson (as the locals call it).

The Dewdrop (24 Station Street) just off A6096
The Ilford ( 93 Station Road ) on the A6096

There's also the Kensington but that's a bit more of a trek to the ground.

 (I know its tea)

In reply to some other threads, I went yesterday.
Prescot's ground isn't the best to say the least but over the years I've been to worst places. I think the problem is that there aren't that many travelling fans who watched us in pre-Conference days so the state of some grounds comes as a bit of a shock to them.
Thought we played a lot better than Saturday, took our chances but still look like conceding despite a M O M performance from the new lad, Ben Brown. Still, no complaints from me.
We found plenty to do in Prescot even on a Boxing Day. Very good Thwaites bitter and Bomber in the Clockface (shame the Flying Shuttle was off though) and good Everards Sleighbell and Jennings Cumberland in the Sun. No real ale in the Old Mill unfortunately which mean't we had to walk all of 20 yards back to the Sun much to the amusement of the locals who we'd just said goodbye to!
Still, good beer and a 5 goal win away from home, all in all a good day out.

The last time I went to Eastwood was back in 1990 for the FA Cup 1st Round qualifier and also the 2nd reply (remember them?).
We drank at the Gresley Castle which for all I know might be shut now.
Anyway, some research has come up with two recommendations.
The Three Tuns in Three Tuns Road (honest) which is a GBG listed pub and home to some 16 tortoises (I kid you not) and the Sun Inn in Derby Road which offers a 15p discount per pint on production of a CAMRA membership card (or at least it did last year).

Glyn

... and how much is CAMRA membership, ie how many pints would one have to drink to be in profit?

Good shout, literately minutes away from the ground. If you walk to our club house from where the coach parks, walk past the front and take the back road out. When you get to the main road you will see an old garage opposite. Up the site is a cut through, go up there and turn left, pub about 50 yds on the right.

and the Sun Inn in Derby Road which offers a 15p discount per pint on production of a CAMRA membership card (or at least it did last year).
The other end of the town a good 10-15mins walk. Follow the directions above to the main road, turn left, and keep walking.

Two pubs it's probably best to avoid are the Lord Nelson and Man in Space...Even I get dirty looks in these two and I have only been left 8yrs.

The clubhouse I am told sells a decent pint (so I am told) and one of the cheapest places around if thats likely to sway your decision.

Terry Mac bring plenty of money, it's your round.....:)

Cheers Derby Badger, thanks for the info.

Glyn, CAMRA Membership also gives you free/ reduced admission to various Beer Festivals so with a bit of planning over the year, you can easily re-coup your outlay!

Sorry but I'm here again to tell you how the beer we had on Saturday was better than the football we watched.
Anyway, we started off in The Quiet Woman (great name - take a look at the pub sign outside) where the 3 Milestone Beers were all in very good condition-also had a good chat with the Landlord about Real Ale. We then moved on to the Den Engel, a Belgian style bar with a great selection of Belgian beers although most of us stuck to the Ales on offer, Holdens Golden Glow and Burton Bridge Spring Ale, before finishing off at the Wilkes Head, a Pub owned by the Whim Brewery whose Hartington IPA was excellent.
After the game we had time for a quick Everards Tiger in the Dyers Arms just outside Harrison Park before returning to the Cross Keys where the St Austell Proper Job finished off the day.
So, a good day out apart from the result. In the first half we were never in it although we did improve in the second. Let's hope the improvement continues tomorrow.
