I thought the star of the show for the first friendly was Tom Ward (although I didn't find out his name until about 2 hours after the game had finished!).
He looks as though he has got a great engine, was up and down the pitch all day, make some good well timed tackles in defence and produced some good strong runs going forward.
I was also impressed with Paul Robinson in defence who made some timely interventions to stop a Stockport strike on goal and Joe Clarke on the right wing looked as though he has something about him.
After seeing Rees Styche score two goals at Kendal last season with an incredible amount of quality and composure I was looking forward to seeing him develop further this season in the first team and he produced an excellent second half performance showing he could play on the left side of midfield as well as up front.
First signs look quite good, but there is a long way to go and you can't really say anything about how the season may go at the moment. I didn't think our players deserved the 4-0 scoreline, the last three goals came because we were piling players forward and got caught on the break by Stockport's pace, and of course our opponents full time superior fitness no doubt told as well.
Looking forward to Kidsgrove tomorrow night, they've got a lethal strike force of Lennon and Rhead (80 goals between just the two of them last season in all competitions) and they let plenty in at the back as well, so there may be goals galore.
