And the first "half glass is empty " award of the 08/09 season goes to -
Was you at the game, It was the first game of the season for both clubs and was entertaining. Plenty to give us hope for the future but as we found last pre season is that players who performed well were cherry picked by clubs with a lot more finacial clout. I spotted Managers/assistant managers from other clubs at our game. Just hope they all know the rules that we require 7 days notice for players signed on non contract forms and anyone on contract is a no no although that has still not stopped a couple of clubs from breaking FA Rules.
With regard to Walsall they only went back a few days ago so the game was early for them, they at least learned a little about some of the players on view. For me the players who looked the better prospects were the players who came through their own youth set up.Thanks Jim for sending a side, pity the Saddlers fans did not bother to travel as it appeared that the majority of the crowd were supporting the Pitmen which is a very encouraging sign.

I agree with your analysis Rod, it was a disappointing crowd for a friendly against a full strength Walsall side but it was the Walsall fans who were conspicuous by their absence. There has been a lot of stick for the Walsall FC Board from their supporters in recent months and I think our old friend Jimmy is going to have a really tough time in the months ahead. I sincerely wish him all the best!
I also thought that Walsall's brightest hopes were their 'home grown' players Ishmael Demontagnac and Alex Nicholls, both very quick and lively.

Belatedly, thanks to Fozzie for the updates to me in Stamford, which I was able to forward to Del in Marldon so that he cold post on the site back in Hednesford.... isn't technology wonderful??!!
If I'm reading the Mercury report right (see other thread), is that right that the Saddlers changed all 11 at half-time but we left 5 unused subs on the bench?
BTW, I'm thinking of running a coach to Belper next Saturday, anyone out there who can drive the horses for me?

Yes Walsall played 1/2 first-team, 1/2 reserves first half and the remaining members of the 22, second half (though I gather a couple were trialists rather than reserves) so we had Rene Gilmartin who is reserve to Clayton Ince, as well as their two best players who scored the goals, come on in the second half, plus 8 others. I assume they did the same at Bloxwich on Friday, so that everybody got 90 minutes over the two matches; seems like a pretty shrewd way of doing things, while pleasing the punters and the host sides' officials. we did bring subs on in the normal way during 2nd half, but were a bit outrun for 2nd and 3rd goals. As I say elsewhere, there were a couple of waistlines that Brother Starbuck would have never tolerated

I've seen worst first pre-season friendly games and we've played Walsall before later in the pre-season schedule and lost by a greater margin.
I personally think it was an encouraging start and my next game will be Saturday at Belper!
