View Full Version : First/Best/Worst
Hallo
24th-June-2008, 11:54
This seems to be doing the rounds a little on some other forums so I thought I'd add it on here. What was your first, best and worst match?
First: Walsall pre-season friendly, think it was 1997, all I can remember was Joe playing about 20 mins and Charlie Ntmark for them, think we lost 3-1.
Best: Easily the FA Trophy final although the trip to Aldershot was a good game as was the trips to Chippenham and Merthyr Tydfil a year later.:clap2:
Worst: Seen quite a few, could go for relegation from conference but I'm going for the FA Cup away match against Histon 05-06 season when we pretty much realised that the team was no where good enough for that level and the season pretty much declined from there. Think it was Nuneaton Away that season where we 2nd to every single ball and lost badly, the players where surprised that we was still singing, think that game highlight that season.
:clap2:
First: v North Ferriby United .. 26th April 2008
Best: v North Ferriby United .. 26th April 2008
Worst: v North Ferriby United .. 26th April 2008
:D .... well, didn't have much choice really!!

First: at home versus Rushden (pre-diamonds) in, I think 1985/6 and we lost 1-0 if i remember rightly (i should have learned from that :p)
Best: Blackpool away in the FA Cup, as it was the first "big" shock result i can recall, although any of the end of season games from the season we got promoted to the conference runs it close. :clap2::)
Worst: 8-0 loss away to Northwich a couple of years ago, we were absolutely clueless and weren't even second to the ball that day. No exageration to say that any eleven from the stands would have put up a better showing, even carrying a pie and a cup of tea!!

First - 1995 against Corby (I think) - it was the penultimate game at the Cross Keys and I was about 6 at the time. The second was the Leek game which we nearly didnt get in to due to the amount of people at the game.
Best - Games that spring to mind are - Corby/Leek (1995), Halifax (1995) [most games that season were good] Blackpool/York/Middlesbrough (1996/1997), Hull (1997), Canvey Island (2004), Burton (2005), Chippenham (2005), Stafford (2006), Telford (2006), Plus many more. Although my three favourite must be: -
* 2005 Merthyr 1-1 Hednesford - Great ground, great atmosphere, and a good game. We took a pasting through the second half and extra time - but then we managed to win it on penalties. Definately one of the best games i've been to.
* 1997 Hednesford 2-3 Middlesbrough - Nearly beat a Premier League team on their own ground - probably the defining moment in Pitmen history.
* 1996 Blackpool 0-1 Hednesford - First win over a football league team and first time in the F.A Cup second round. Extra special day as we wen't with a few friends from Primary school so there was a big group. Plus everyone was expecting us to get a pasting!
Ironically all those games were away from home. I can't really remember a favourite home game, but the one that springs to mind was when we scored twice in the last few minutes to get past Dunstable in to the playoffs a few years ago.
Worst - Hednesford 0-3 Eastwood - That was when i think everyone realised that we wern't good enough this year.
Overall we've had a lot of good games over the last ten years or so and hopefully if things work out with the new chairman we can start seeing the same successes again..

To be honest they we're only getting their own back form what we did to them back in the conference, which was probably the highlight of the season we got relegated. Can anyone remember the scorers from the 7-1 win. Can only remember a Goodwin chip and Sedge turning the defense inside out for a tap in for the 7th.

Great idea for a thread
First: 1959 v ?? Can't remember, but the pop [out of a bottle with a straw], crisps [if we had such things back then] and gambolling down the bank on the opposite side to the stand were great fun (as, we were recalling at the weekend, was doing the same down the "sunny banks" on the Old Hednesford Rd between jcns with Common Lane and Crab Lane, you couldn't do that now either, though they are still there!!
:)
Best: Trophy Final of course, though the win over Leek in the last game at the Cross Keys to seal promotion was very special and a good 2nd
:)
Worst: yes, has to be Northwich away, we've all seen the Pitmen lose many times (well, Del hasn't, but he does have a 100% record), but I've never been so embarrassed, nor known that the game was lost with only 20 minutes gone
:(

Didn't Mark Cooper score a hat-trick? or even 4? If I remember rightly he hadn't scored for us until this game. I remember the people by me saying he was a useless signing and would never score!!

Not far off really - did he score in more than three games?
Anyway, to the thread
First was either Lye Town with my grandad or Darlaston with my dad in the Birmingham League 1955-6 season - I've lost the fixture list but they were the only two that year I attended.
Best has to be Middlesborough. Canvey might have edged it, had Wembley been available, but I remember as a kid playing an FA Cup board game called 'Wembley' where you threw different coloured dice for higher/lower status league teams and I refused to play unless we replaced one of the Div 3 North or South teams with Hednesford, so that once every hundred games or so you would have them beating Man United 6-4 in the semi-finals. Middlesboro was the closest to that we're ever likely to see in my lifetime.
Worst is probably an Easter fixture in the truly horrific 1972-3 season in the awful Midland League (though it covered much the same sort of area as our current one, despite its name) when I don't think there were more than 40 people in, and we lost 1-0 to I think it may have been Eastwood, though there were two Eastwoods then, one from Hanley, and I've no idea which.. one or two matches in the first Starbuck season weren't a fat lot better, though.

first - at home to dagenham (not sure about the redbridge) in 1993 in the 4th qualifying round of the fa cup. someone missed a pen in the 2nd min and then archie king scored a pen later on. i think.
best - for football it would probably be blackpool. didnt think we stood a chance in hell and we shouldve got thrashed. for socialising, probably worksop away a couple of seasons back.
worst - although i've seen us get beat countless times, the worst game i can think of was stamford away last season when we won 2-0. it took 3 hrs to get there, the game was awful, it was cold and raining and afterwards i watched an awesome man u beat villa 4-0 and it made me wonder why i bothered with non-league footy.

First - vs Gresley in the WML in the 77/78 season. It was the middle of winter as the floodlghts were on and I was sitting on the benches that constituted a stand in those days. Went to that game as my dad wouldn't take me too the Strangers FA Cup game against Halifax as my mum was worried about crowd trouble!!
Have to say a big thank you to them both in retrospect!!
Best - Blackpool away without a doubt
Worst - Away games at Bridgnorth, Bilston and Telford when we had 6 stuck past us. Also went to Hastings to see us draw 0-0, someone dribbled a pen wide of the post, can't remember who it was but after 10 hours of travel I was knackered and vowed never to go to games on the south coast again
Just to develop the thread a bit, as our conversation at the pub went off at a tangent....
Best goal seen
Best own goal seen
Best player seen
Worst player seen (we have covered these two previously but if you didn't contribute then feel free to do so now...)
I'll post mine later....

Best goal - Richus White vs Newcastle Town - SSC (from the half way line)
I'll think about the others!

Best goal; without a doubt Kev Francis against Cambridge:clap2:
I'll have to have a think about the others too.

Best Own Goal - Kevin Collin's spectacular lob over the goalkeeper in his testamonial match.
Best Goal - Joe O'conner in the FA Cup run season, think it was against Evesham. He was on the edge of the box facing away from the goal and still managed to smash it in to the top corner. His header against Middlesbrough wasn't too bad either.
Worst Player - Richard Teesdale.

Worst Player - Richard Teesdale.
:eek::confused:
Really???
I've seen a hell of a lot worse than him, infact I thought he was pretty good compared to the rest of the squad at the time.
Worse player for me is either Adie Mike, Robbie Dennison or Andy Hayward.

Worst player - Ian Smith. Ginger headed midfield maestro of the 80s. Probably holds the record number of consecutive appearences on the bench without getting on.
He had to come on one game and i was tempted to go home and get my boots
Best goal - obviously many on here didn't see Richus' strike. Kev's was spectacular, but what about the goal that an ex-Strangers winger (whose name escapes me) scored in the 6-2 win against Ilkeston? As good as Kev's but Richus' was truly remarkable
Interesting.
Last night in the pub we were saying, worst player might mean the most useless, or the one who least lived up to the reputation he came with....(Dennison seems to be everyone's candidate for that?)
... and likewise best goal might be the screamer from 45 yards, or the one which meant most at the time eg Leon McSweeney's 95th-minute equaliser at The Tip
Memory goes back too far to be able to sift through all the candidates, but the "Eric Bailey Fan Club" (as we named his one and only fan) might be upset if I nominated him as our worst player in the last 50 years....
I can't remember any own goals.... (though I did see Bobby Woodruff score for the Villa with a 35-yard header when playing for Cardiff!!)

but what about the goal that an ex-Strangers winger (whose name escapes me) scored in the 6-2 win against Ilkeston?
Was it Shaun Wray, Perton?
Best Goal: Super Kev's against Cambridge.
Most Memorable Goal: Joe's first agianst Middlesbrough, Joe's tap-in from two yards against Blackpool, Brinner's wonder strike in the FA Trophy Final and Leon's goal against the Strangers all stand out.
Brinner's wonder strike in the FA Trophy Final
Oops, yes, that one did get a mention in the pub!!
:rolleyes::doh::clap2:
Danny Kelly on talkSPORT is doing a phone-in on "the biggest waste of money", inspired by Liverpool releasing Harry Kewell after his contract expired....
Stoke fan just phoned to nominate Peter Shilton, and his argument was pretty convincing!!

Best Goal - 'Mush' Davies scoring from 10 yards inside his own half at Armitage on a wet November night under those 10 foot high candles.Circa 1979 I think.
Gosh I was only 4 at the time:eek::lie::lie:

Geraint Jones lobbed the Dudley keeper from the half way line in a five -one midweek rout under our 10 feet high candles. He looked staggered rather than surprised though so I suspect he didn't exactly intend that one (circa 1978 I think)

Best goal - Stuart Lake's pile-driver against Gainsboro in the Trophy (97-98 ish) in a 5-1 win? Brinners was just about ok though.
Best Player -- Wayne Simpson/Kev Foster.
Worst Player -- Derek Rae at best hopeless.
Own Goal -- Can't think of many recently as our defenders don't usually get that near to the ball when it's in the box. Either box for that matter.
